The clatter of dice.
A solitary gunshot.
No daring escape.

📖 About this haiku

This little poem builds through subtraction. The dice clatter first, all possibility and noise, the kind of sound that promises a game still in motion. Then the gunshot cuts that promise short, solitary and final, no crowd noise around it, just one report doing all the work. The last line refuses the story we expect from those first two images: no chase, no last-minute reprieve, just a flat statement of absence. That's the turn, and it's a quiet gut-punch precisely because it doesn't dramatize itself.

The mood sits somewhere cold and wintry, even without weather in it, everything stripped to essentials. What compression achieves here is the withholding of narrative. We're given consequence without cause, aftermath without spectacle. A second read makes you notice how much silence surrounds that single gunshot, and how the poem trusts you to supply the dread yourself.
