Bright lights, neon dreams.
A city of the future.
Little do they know.

📖 About this haiku

The opening line does the easy work first — bright lights, neon dreams — that familiar shimmer of futurism, all surface and promise. The second line widens the frame, naming it plainly: a city of the future, confident, almost like a postcard caption. Then the closing line cuts the legs out from under both. Little do they know withholds the punchline entirely, and that withholding is the whole trick. No season here, no weather — the mood is synthetic, urban, timeless in the way neon always feels slightly untethered from real time. What rewards rereading is the pivot in tone rather than image: the first two lines describe a place, the third implicates the people in it, and suddenly the bright lights read as blindness instead of wonder. Compression forces you to supply the missing dread yourself, which is more unsettling than any explanation could be.
