Coco by the fire.
Outside howls winter's embrace.
Christmas with loved ones.

📖 About this haiku

There's a warmth-cold hinge at the center of this one. That cup of cocoa and the fire give you the whole first line as pure comfort, and then winter arrives with teeth — "howls" is doing real work there, turning weather into something almost alive and hungry at the window. That contrast is the engine of the poem: safety made vivid by the threat just outside it. Then the third line widens the lens without raising its voice, naming the reason all this coziness matters. Nothing showy, just the quiet reveal that the fire and the cocoa were never really the point — the people around them were.

What the compression earns is restraint. A longer poem might linger on the family, list who's there, what they're doing. Here you only get the glow and the sound of wind, and your own memory fills in the rest. That's why it rewards a second read: the empty space is doing the warming.
