Standard issue shovels
Hastily dug trenches in chilled rain
No rest for the damned.

📖 About this haiku

The central image is quietly brutal: standardized tools against the mud and misery of trench warfare, that word "issue" doing double duty as both military jargon and a quiet comment on what's been handed to these men. There's no romance here, just the grind of labor under weather that offers no mercy. The chilled rain does seasonal work too, placing us in a cold, joyless stretch of time where even the elements refuse comfort.

The turn lands hard in that final line. After two lines of physical, almost procedural description, "no rest for the damned" pulls back to something closer to judgment or exhaustion speaking for itself. It's the line that recontextualizes the shovels and trenches as something closer to purgatory than simple hardship.

What the compression achieves is restraint. There's no editorializing about war's horror, just objects and weather and bodies at work, letting the starkness speak for itself. A second read makes "damned" feel earned rather than dramatic.
