📖 The answer, explained

The trick here is that every clue sounds like a monster when it's really a measurement. Nothing physical can chew through iron, birds, mountains, and kings alike — but time does, quietly, without teeth. That's the misdirection: Gollum stacks up violent verbs, devours, gnaws, bites, grinds, slays, so your mind hunts for some ravenous creature or force of nature, maybe a dragon or the sea. But the real answer is invisible and constant, working so slowly you don't notice the damage until the tower's rubble and the king's a legend. The riddle works because it describes an effect everyone has felt, decay, aging, ruin, without ever naming the cause. Once "time" surfaces, every line clicks into place at once, which is exactly the satisfying snap a good riddle is built for.
