📖 Notes & analysis

One direction: play it tender. A newborn granddaughter, scrunched and pink and furious at the world, and the line comes from a grandfather who means it as the highest compliment — she looks like a whole new species, unclaimed by anyone's expectations yet. Another direction: play it eerie. A late-night observation about the new neighbor who never blinks quite on time, told through a suburban narrator trying to convince themselves they're not losing their mind. Or take it comic and self-referential — a kid at a costume contest overhearing the judges, and spending the rest of the scene deciding whether to be devastated or thrilled that "alien" was apparently the vibe she nailed. Same six words, three completely different rooms to stand in — pick the one that makes you want to write the next line before you've finished this one.
