📖 Notes & analysis

Funny thing about that line — it can go a dozen ways depending on who's holding the pitchforks. Maybe it's playground politics: a kid getting ganged up on by friends over something small, and the line lands as a plea for someone to break rank. Maybe it's a family dinner where relatives have quietly agreed on an opinion nobody actually holds alone, and one person finally names the pile-on out loud. Or push it further into comedy — a book club, a group chat, a fantasy football league that's turned oddly tribal over nothing, where the accusation is technically true and everyone knows it. You could also flip the mob inward, someone catching themselves following a crowd they don't believe in, asking the question of their own reflection. Start with who's asking, who's answering, and what they're afraid will happen if the mob wins.
