Write about a birth in your family.
Your move, writer.
Write about a birth in your family.
Your move, writer.
There's the birth you remember firsthand, or think you do — the version stitched together from photographs and your mother's retelling until you can't tell what's memory and what's inheritance. Try writing it as if you were there, even if you weren't, and see what your imagination fills in.
Or take the parent's side of it instead. What was the waiting room like, the drive to the hospital, the specific fear or joy of becoming someone's mother or father for the first time. Sometimes the most moving version of this story isn't the baby at all — it's the person who was terrified and thrilled in equal measure, holding the door open for a whole new person to walk through.
There's also room for humor here — the chaos, the wrong hospital bag, the uncle who fainted. Birth stories are rarely tidy. Let yours be a little messy too.
