There's the small classroom moment that felt enormous at the time — raising a hand to disagree with a teacher or correct an unfairness at the lunch table, and the strange cocktail of pride and nausea that followed. There's the family version, where speaking up meant challenging a relative's joke or a parent's rule, and the story becomes as much about the silence afterward as the words themselves. Or take it into adulthood: a meeting where you said the unpopular thing, a letter you finally sent, a stranger you defended in public — and the plot twist isn't whether you were right, but what it cost or earned you socially. You could also flip it entirely and write about the time you stayed quiet, and what speaking up now, in the retelling, finally lets you say.
