“Where can we get that?”
Your move, writer.
“Where can we get that?”
Your move, writer.
Four words, and everything depends on who's asking and what "that" is. A kid could be pointing at a stranger's dog, a birthday cake three tiers tall, a skill they just watched someone else pull off with infuriating ease — that's the story of wanting, and wanting is always a little funny and a little tender. Or make it two adults in a hardware store, one of them nodding at some contraption neither of them needs, and let the question become an excuse to keep talking, to stay in the aisle a little longer. There's a stranger version too: something impossible sitting in a shop window, or in someone's memory, or in a dream one of you keeps having — "that" as a door into a story where the answer isn't a store at all, but a place, a person, a version of a life you didn't know was for sale.
