Write a story about a picture
Your move, writer.
There's the picture that starts the story and the picture that ends it — worth deciding which one you're writing toward before you begin. Maybe it's a photograph found in a drawer, half-recognizable, that sends someone chasing a memory that turns out to belong to a stranger. Maybe it's a child's drawing pinned to a fridge, and the story lives in what the grown-ups don't notice but should. Or turn it sideways: a portrait that's being painted right now, in real time, and the tension is in the sitter's stillness — what they're holding back from the person with the brush. You could also let the picture be wrong somehow, a face that doesn't match a name, a landscape that shouldn't exist, and build the whole piece around that quiet wrongness. Pick the frame first. Then decide who's looking at it, and why they can't look away.
