Write about a death in your family.
Your move, writer.
Write about a death in your family.

There's the obvious road, the real one, and you're allowed to take it slow. A grandmother's hands. The casserole dishes that multiplied in the fridge. The strange relief of laughing at the funeral because someone told the story about the lawnmower again. Write toward the specific smell of a hospital room or a kitchen after, and let the small details carry what's too big to say straight.
Or sidestep into invention. The family dog who understood more than anyone gave him credit for. A great-uncle known only through one sepia photograph and a rumor about Argentina. Build a death that never happened to you, and see what grief borrows from imagination.
Or go sideways entirely — a goldfish funeral staged with full ceremony by a six-year-old, solemn and ridiculous and somehow completely sincere. Sometimes the smallest losses teach us how to hold the large ones.
