📖 Notes & analysis

There's something quietly devastating in watching something shrink rather than vanish — you could lean into that slow-motion ache and write this as a breakup dressed in cosmic clothing, two people who still love each other but are simply, inexorably moving apart, the moon and its companion becoming a metaphor neither character says out loud. Or flip it toward wonder: a child or an old astronomer watching this as a once-in-a-lifetime event, narrating the science and the awe together, finding hope in the idea that distance doesn't erase connection, just changes its shape. There's also a mythic route — give the moon and its departing companion names, rival gods or old friends bound by an ancient pact, and let their drifting apart be the origin story for something humans now take for granted, like tides, or winter, or the ache of missing someone far away.
