“Where are you going to get fifty-thousand dollars that quickly?”
Your move, writer.
That question could crack open in so many directions. Play it as heist comedy — a ragtag family cooking up increasingly absurd fundraising schemes, from garage sales to llama rentals, with the dialogue carrying all the chaos and warmth. Or take it somewhere quieter: a parent sitting across from a hospital administrator, the number landing like a stone, the scene less about scheming and more about the terrifying math of love. There's also room for a caper with real teeth — a crew of unlikely allies, a ticking clock, a plan nobody quite trusts, where the question is less "where" and more "who's willing to risk what." Try writing the line three times with three different tones behind it — panicked, sly, resigned — and see which version hands you the rest of the story.
