📖 Notes & analysis

There's the schoolyard confession angle — the stolen candy, the copied homework, the small crime that felt enormous at age nine, and the strange hollow relief of never being caught, which sometimes weighs more than punishment would have. There's comedy waiting here too: the heist that went absurdly right, the white lie that snowballed into a ridiculous cover story you're still maintaining at family dinners. Or turn it sideways and write about getting away with something kind disguised as mischief — skipping work to help a stranger, breaking a rule for a good reason, and never explaining yourself. You could also write it as a letter to the one person who still doesn't know, decades later, deciding whether tonight's the night you finally tell them. Mischief, guilt, humor, tenderness — pick the one that still makes your stomach drop a little.
