This morning I woke up and was 40 years old.

Your move, writer.

📖 Notes & analysis

You could play this as quiet realism first: the narrator catalogs small, unglamorous proof of adulthood — a creaking knee, a mortgage statement, a kid's muddy cleats by the door — and the piece becomes less about shock and more about reckoning with a life that arrived while they were busy living it. Or swing into body-swap comedy, Freaky Friday style, where a twenty-something or ten-year-old wakes up stuck in a stranger's forty-year-old life and has to bluff their way through a job, a marriage, a dentist appointment. There's also a wistful fantasy angle: maybe they actually skipped twenty years overnight, and the piece becomes a gentle mystery — what happened to the decades, who did they become, and do they want those years back or not. Pick the ache, the laugh, or the mystery.
