📖 Notes & analysis

The order works because it mirrors how a moment actually forms inside a person before it reaches the world. A feeling arrives first, raw and wordless. Thought follows as the mind tries to interpret that feeling. Action comes next, the body responding before language catches up. Dialogue is last because speech is the most processed, most social layer of response. Skipping straight to dialogue makes characters sound like they're narrating their own psychology instead of living it. For example: her stomach dropped, she wondered if he'd seen the text, she set the phone face-down, then said, "Everything okay?" The caution is not to treat this as a rigid formula for every single beat. Real moments sometimes compress or skip steps entirely, and forcing all four every time will make your prose feel mechanical rather than alive.
