📖 Notes & analysis

Disagreement works because it forces specificity. Two characters who agree are just delivering information to the audience; two characters who disagree have to defend a position, reveal what they value, and react to being challenged. That friction is where personality leaks out. Say you're writing a scene where a family decides what to do with grandma's house. Instead of everyone nodding toward selling it, have one sibling insist on keeping it for sentimental reasons while another needs the money immediately. Now the scene has stakes, history, and tension simmering under ordinary dialogue. The caution: don't force conflict into every exchange just for friction's sake. If characters bicker constantly with no variation, disagreement stops feeling meaningful and starts feeling exhausting, flattening relationships instead of deepening them.
